    Responsibilities

    Summary of Position with General Responsibilities:

    The Sr. Safety Specialist will be responsible for overseeing safety processes and initiatives for all Updike Distribution Logistics entities. The Sr. Safety Specialist will work with the executive team and various department heads in the development and implementation of safety programs and facility improvements designed to protect the employees, company, equipment, and consumer products. This position will hold management accountable for existing and future project completion, procedure accuracy, and providing information that will be used to measure key performance indicators (KPI) relative to health, safety, environmental, and facility goals. This position will be responsible for creating the monthly safety committee agenda and communications.

     

    Provide ongoing communications to the Executive Team, Directors, and Management Team

    Produce monthly KPI reports for operational and executive level staff

    Interpret data, internal processes, and operations for creation, implementation, and improvement

    Identify, evaluate and assess probability and severity of losses on claims at risk of critical exposure.

    Develop, implement, and monitor cost containment strategies to prevent and minimize losses

    Perform research on frequent claim trends; provide findings with recommendations to leadership as appropriate

    Monitor TPA performance, ensure commitments of contract and assist in establishing expectations and metrics

    Provide internal training and guidance on best practices for managing Workers Compensation processes and adherence to state laws

    Present information and respond to Health and Safety questions or concerns from employees, managers, and customers

    Ensure that all warehouse equipment meets safety regulations and that all equipment and tools are used correctly by employees

    Understanding of OSHA regulations as it relates to state and federal levels

    Responsible to conduct warehouse safety audits and implementing appropriate changes to correct or comply with regulations/standards

    Ensure driver compliance with DOT regulations and company policies

    Ensures safety and federally administered compliance regulations are enforced for equipment, vehicles, and transport vehicles

    Involvement in trucking associations and keeping management informed of new regulations

    Interface with a variety of departments on projects

    Oversee the development of new safety training programs, oversees the safety committee meetings

    Conduct safety training for all new employees

    Analyze and produce authorization for expenses needed

    Development of a Business Continuity Plan for each location

    Travel required

    Qualifications

    Basic Qualifications:

    Strong Analytical and detail analysis

    Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

    Strong skills in written and verbal communication

    Strong desire to learn and improve and take charge of processes and process improvement

    Thorough working knowledge of Workers Compensation and procedural requirements for managing worker’s compensation claims

    Have the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time

    Strong knowledge of current OSHA, FDA, EPA, and DOT regulations

    Ability to excel in a team oriented environment, collaborating and communicating with a variety of internal and external partners at all levels of the company

    Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems

    Complex Problem Solving — identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

    Additional Desirable Qualifications Skills and Knowledge:

    Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or on the path towards obtaining a CSP

    OSHA 30-hr or 10-hr Certification

    Food Safety Certifications- GMP, Qualified Auditor, HACCP, ETC.

    Commercial Drivers License

     

    Education and/or Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of Health & Safety experience OR

    Master’s degree and two (2) years of Health & Safety experience

    Experience in the transportation industry. DOT compliance exposure

    Experience with warehouse industry

    Experience working with food grade facilities
